Put Your Red Shoes On and Dance the Blues

“Put on your red shoes and dance the blues” - David Bowie’s shoes through the ages

Today, the music legend David Bowie passed away. He was an inspirational, creative and magical music genius. This was reflected from his incredible voice all the way down to his tapping red platform boots. The quote above is how I picture Bowie’s footwear style.

Born in 1947 which is surprisingly the year Dr. Martens were founded; maybe this accounts for David Bowie’s excellent boot styles throughout his career. When he shot to fame in 1969 with the single “Space Oddity”, it may have been a decade of kitten heels, but Bowie favoured a striking thigh boot. His alter ego Ziggy Stardust was definitely a fan of epic high heels, that if you are as clumsy as me you would be worried about breaking your ankle on the dance floor. However, in Bowie’s performances he danced and shimmied in these crazy fantastic heels without any mishaps (100% more coordinated than most of us).

In 1976 Bowie, escaping his rock ‘n’ roll life style, moved to Switzerland.  Switzerland at the time was known for smart loafers and essential hiking boots over perilous platforms. I imagine Bowie ditching the high heels reclining on a leather seat, smoking a roll-up, watching a sunset over Lake Geneva whilst his feet are comforted by some smart brown Oxfords.

“Under Pressure” (my favourite Bowie song, don’t judge me) was released in 1981 when David Bowie collaborated with Queen. Bowie still wore beautifully designed boots but, Freddie Mercury wore his famous black and white Addidas for performing this song. Trust me; check out these music icons and their dancing feet on Youtube as soon as you can.

In 1992, Bowie married a beautiful Somali Model called Iman.  Of course, Bowie wore a pair of black formal shoes for the wedding. However, for the beach photograph he looks effortlessly cool next to his wife, wearing a pair of black sneakers that are very Van like. Secretly, hoping my future husband will look this good in the wedding photos (unlikely, as I’m not a Somali model).

David Bowie performed his last performance looking unusually dapper in a suit and some brown boots in 2006.  I am deeply saddened that this was his last performance however; I know I will remember David Bowie for his musical masterpieces and his fabulous footwear.

It must not be forgotten he has inspired some great pieces of footwear too. These rock star baby shoes should be bought by parents everywhere.
